<resp>To reuse the Kühn’s edition for the Galenus verbatim project, we (silently) corrected the texts as found in the <orgName source="https://github.com/OpenGreekAndLatin/First1KGreek">First1KGreek</orgName> repository, whether there were mistakes of transcriptions, errors in the metadata or missing parts of the text. We added bibliographical references to the previous editions referred to in Kühn’s edition as "Bas." and "Chart.": that of the Γαληνοῦ Ἅπαντα published in Basel (hence referred to as #Basel) and the Operum Hippocratis Coi, et Galeni Pergameni of René Chartier (hence referred to as #Chartier); we changed the naming schemes of the milestones indicating the corresponding Basel and Chartier pages in Kühn’s edition, and added the corresponding Basel and Chartier volume number. The editions other than that of Kühn were given milestones indicating the corresponding Kühn volume and pages when they were missing. Treatises from Kühn’s edition were given line numbers. We also added elements of structuration that were present in Kühn’s edition but were missing in the TEI, mainly the division of chapters into sections in some treatises, as well as the header for those sections. The text of headings containing the name of chapter and numbers of chapters and sections have been restored, as well as the original symbols as they appear in Kühn’s printed edition. The text numbered tlg0057.tlg096 that was separately edited was reinserted in the tlg0057.tlg095 in accordance with its location within Kühn’s edition. <lb n="3"/>τὴν ψυχὴν ἡμῶν αὐτὴν οἱ μὲν ἀσώματόν τινα νομίζουσιν
<lb n="4"/>οὐσίαν εἶναι, τινὲς δὲ πνεῦμα, καθάπερ ἄλλοι μηδὲ εἶναί
<lb n="5"/>τινα ὕπαρξιν αὐτῆς ἰδίαν, ἀλλὰ τὴν ἰδιότητα τῆς τοῦ

<lb n="8"/>ἀλλὰ τῆς ἐνεργούσης οὐσίας κατ’ αὐτὴν πρὸς τὰ γινόμενα,
<lb n="9"/>δι’ αὐτῆς τε καὶ ὑπ’ αὐτῆς δυνάμεις ἔχειν λεγομένης, ὧν
<lb n="10"/>πέφυκε δρᾷν. ἐγὼ τοίνυν ἐν τούτοις μέσην τινὰ τάξιν
<lb n="11"/>ἐμαυτὸν ἔταξα. περὶ γὰρ ἄλλων δογμάτων ἀποφαινόμενος
<lb n="12"/>ἁπλῶς, τῶν μὲν, ὡς εἰδείην τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἀλήθειαν, τῶν
<lb n="13"/>δὲ, ὡς οὐδὲν αὐτῆς εἰδείην, ἐν οἷς ἄρτι διῆλθον, ἄχρι τοῦ
<lb n="14"/>πιθανοῦ προσέρχομαι, βέλτιον μὲν εἶναι νομίζων, εἴπερ

<lb n="2"/>γνῶσιν οὐκ ἀναγκαίαν ἔχει πρὸς ὑγίειαν σώματος ἢ τὰς
<lb n="3"/>τῆς ψυχῆς ἠθικὰς ἀρετὰς, ἐπεκόσμησε δ’ ἂν, εἴπερ ἐγνώσθη
<lb n="4"/>βεβαίως, διὰ τῶν γιγνωσκομένων ἀκριβῶς, ἀποτελούμενα
<lb n="5"/>κατὰ ἰατρικήν τε καὶ τὴν ἠθικὴν φιλοσοφίαν, ἣν ἐγώ
<lb n="6"/>φημι χρησίμην τε ἅμα καὶ δυνατὴν εἶναι πᾶσι τοῖς βουλομένοις
<lb n="7"/>ἀσκῆσαι· καὶ γέγραπταί μοι περὶ τούτου δύο βιβλία.
<lb n="8"/>νυνὶ δὲ ὅπερ ὑπεσχόμην προσάξω, τὴν ἀρχὴν ἐνθένδε ποιησάμενος.
<lb n="9"/>ὅτι μὲν ἐκ τῆς τῶν δ’ στοιχείων κράσεως ἅπαντα
<lb n="10"/>τὰ παρ’ ἡμῖν σώματα γίγνεται, βεβαίως γιγνώσκειν φημί·
<lb n="11"/>καὶ προσέτι δι’ ὅλων αὐτῶν κεραννυμένων, οὐχ, ὡς Ἐμπεδοκλῆς
<lb n="12"/>ἡγεῖτο, κατὰ σμικρὰ μόρια καταθραυομένων. εἴτε δὲ
<lb n="13"/>τῶν σωματικῶν οὐσιῶν ὅλων δι’ ἀλλήλων ἰουσῶν, εἴτε τῶν
<lb n="14"/>ποιοτήτων μόνων, οὔτ’ ἀναγκαῖον εἶναί φημι γινώσκειν,
<lb n="15"/>οὔτε ἀποφαίνομαι. πιθανώτερον δὲ εἶναι νομίζω, κατὰ τὰς
<lb n="16"/>ποιότητας γίγνεσθαι τὰς κράσεις. τήν γε μὴν ψυχὴν, εἰ
<lb n="17"/>μὲν ἀθάνατος οὖσα ταῖς σωματικαῖς οὐσίαις κεραννυμένη τὰ
<lb n="18"/>ζῶα διοικεῖ, γινώσκειν βεβαίως οὐκ ἀπαγγέλλομαι, καθάπερ

<lb n="2"/>μέντοι φαίνεταί μοι σαφῶς, ὅτι, κᾂν εἰσοικίζηται τοῖς σώμασι,
<lb n="3"/>δουλεύει ταῖς φύσεσιν αὐτῶν, αἵπερ εἰσὶν, ὡς ἔφην,
<lb n="4"/>ἐκ τῆς τῶν στοιχείων ποιᾶς κράσεως γιγνόμεναι. καὶ κατὰ
<lb n="5"/>γε τοῦτο πρὸς τὴν ἰατρικὴν τέχνην οὐδὲν ἡγοῦμαι βλαβήσεσθαι
<lb n="6"/>διὰ τὴν ἄγνοιαν τῆς καλουμένης ἐμψυχώσεώς τε
<lb n="7"/>καὶ μετεμψυχώσεως. ἐπιτήδειόν τε γὰρ εἶναι τὸ σῶμα χρὴ
<lb n="8"/>τὸ δεξόμενον τὴν ψυχὴν, ἀλλοιωθέντος τε αὐτοῦ μεγάλην
<lb n="9"/>ἀλλοίωσιν ἐν τῇ κράσει παραχρῆμα τὴν ψυχὴν ἐξιέναι, ψυχομένου
<lb n="10"/>μέντοι σφοδρῶς ἐν ταῖς κενώσεσι τοῦ αἵματος, καὶ
<lb n="11"/>ἐν ταῖς πόσεσι τῶν ψυχόντων φαρμάκων, ὅταν τε σφοδρῶς
<lb n="12"/>ᾖ τὸ περιέχον ψυχρὸν, ἀμέτρως τε θερμαινομένου κατά τε
<lb n="13"/>τοὺς πυρετοὺς καὶ τὰς εἰσπνοὰς τῆς φλογὸς, ἢ τῶν ὑπερθερμαινόντων
<lb n="14"/>φαρμάκων πόσεις. οὐ μόνον δὲ οὕτως ἀλλοιωθείσης
<lb n="15"/>τῆς κράσεως τοῦ σώματος τὴν ψυχὴν ὁρῶμεν
<lb n="16"/>αὐτοῦ χωριζομένην, ἀλλὰ κᾀπειδὰν τῆς ἀναπνοῆς στερηθείη
<lb n="17"/>πάντως, κᾀνταῦθά τινος γινομένης ἀλλοιώσεως κατὰ τὸ σῶμα.
<lb n="18"/>τηρουμένης οὖν τῆς φυσικῆς εὐκρασίας ἐν τῷ σώματι, τὴν

<lb n="2"/>καὶ διὰ τοῦτο τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτῆς, ἥτις ἐστὶν, οὐκ ἀναγκαῖον
<lb n="3"/>οὔτε εἰς τὰς ἰάσεις τῶν νοσημάτων οὔτε εἰς φυλακὴν τῆς
<lb n="4"/>ὑγιείας ἐπίστασθαι, καθάπερ οὐδὲ εἰς τὴν ἠθικὴν φιλοσοφίαν,
<lb n="5"/>πρακτικήν τε καὶ πολιτικήν. ὀνομαζέτω γὰρ αὐτὴν
<lb n="6"/>ἕκαστος, ὡς ἂν ἐθέλῃ, χωρίζων τῆς θεωρητικῆς. ἐπιπλέον δὲ
<lb n="7"/>περὶ τούτων ἐν ἑτέροις ὑπομνήμασι γέγραπταί μοι. τῶν δὲ
<lb n="8"/>φυσικῶν δυνάμεων ἔτι δεδειγμένων, ὁπόσαι τε καὶ ὁποῖαί
<lb n="9"/>εἰσι, ζήτησίς τις γίνεται κατὰ ἀκολουθίαν, ὅπως φαμὲν

<lb n="12"/>ὁποῖον μέν τι τὸ οἰκεῖόν ἐστιν, ὁποῖον δέ τι τὸ ἀλλότριον,
<lb n="13"/>ἢ τὴν ὁλκὴν τῶν οἰκείων, ἢ τὴν ἀπόκρισιν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων
<lb n="14"/>ποιεῖσθαι. τὸ δὲ γνωρίζειν αἰσθητικῆς δυνάμεως ἔργον
<lb n="15"/>εἶναι φαίνεται. διὰ τοῦτο οὖν ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τούτῳ παρακοή
<lb n="16"/>τίς ἐστι, καίτοι σαφῶς εἰρηκότος τοῦ Πλάτωνος· Ἕτερόν
<lb n="17"/>ἐστι γένος αἰσθήσεως ἐν τοῖς φυτοῖς· οἰομένων τῶν ἀκουόντων
<lb n="18"/>εἶναί τινα γνωριστικὴν δύναμιν ἐν αὐτοῖς τῶν οἰκείων

<lb n="3"/>τούτοις ἢ ἀνάλογα τὰ παθήματα γιγνομένη, τῶν
<lb n="4"/>ἄλλων αἰσθητικῶν διαγνώσεων οὐ μετεχούσης τῆς φυτικῆς
<lb n="5"/>ψυχῆς. οὔτε γὰρ τῶν ὁρατῶν, οὔτε τῶν ἀκουστικῶν, οὔτε
<lb n="6"/>τῶν ὀσφραντῶν, οὔτε τῶν γευστῶν, οὔτε τῶν ἁπτῶν ποιοτήτων
<lb n="7"/>ἔχει διάγνωσιν, ἀλλὰ μόνον τῶν τρέφειν ἢ μὴ τρέφειν
<lb n="8"/>δυναμένων. τὰ μὲν γὰρ τρέφειν δυνάμενα πρὸς ἑαυτὴν
<lb n="9"/>ἕλκουσα, καὶ κατέχουσα, καὶ πέπτουσα, καὶ μεταβάλλουσα
<lb n="10"/>πρὸς τὸ οἰκεῖον τῆς τρεφομένης οὐσίας, τὰ δὲ μὴ
<lb n="11"/>δυνάμενα τρέφειν οὐ προσίεται. ὥστε μοι Πλάτων ὀρθῶς
<lb n="12"/>δοκεῖ λέγειν, αἴσθησιν ἔχειν τὰ φυτὰ, τῶν οἰκείων τε καὶ
<lb n="13"/>ἀλλοτρίων δηλονότι, καὶ κατὰ τοῦτο ζῶα προσηκόντως ἂν
<lb n="14"/>λεχθῆναι, μετὰ τοῦ μηδὲ τῆς ἐξ αὑτῶν κινήσεως ἐστερῆσθαι.
<lb n="15"/>ἀλλὰ μηδὲ τῆς τοιαύτης γνώσεως ἀναγκαίας οὔσης εἰς τὴν
<lb n="16"/>ἰατρικὴν φιλοσοφίαν, ἀρκοῦμαι διὰ τὴν ἀκολουθίαν μόνην
<lb n="17"/>ἄχρι τοῦ πιθανοῦ προερχόμενος ἐπαινεῖν τὸν Πλάτωνα,
